An interview with JAMES MELLO of MIRROR

Mirror’ is a short film created by James Mello, about two broken souls reuniting with each other and sharing their personal stories of pain that has carried on with them.  Only to realize the stories they shared, were doomed to repeating itself.  We caught up with the director with an interview on this film.

UniversalCinema Magazine (UM): The foreshadowing elements were well placed in the film.  How did you come up with the set up for this story?

James Mello (JM): Revisiting the previous drafts was essential to create a concise story. An important factor working through those drafts was sticking with the ending which conceived the construction of the script. Also, I have to give incredible praise to the script editor for Mirror, Vivian Lin, to help solidify the story.

(UM): What themes were you trying to convey in this film?

(JM): Isolation and loneliness within the relationship and characters individually are the major themes in the project.

(UM): Have you ever heard stories of real events that feel similar to the plot you wrote for your film?

(JM): There’s a particular story that resonates with deeply me that’s difficult to express in detail, but I was close to someone that lost his wife through suicide leaving their child behind. As suicide is a tragedy throughout the world, I wanted to convey a story that expresses those raw and vulnerable experiences.

(UM): How long did it take for you to complete this project?

(JM): From developing the multiple drafts, hiring the cast and crew, filming and editing; it took roughly eight months.

(UM): What did you think of the portrayals of Teddy and Emily?

(JM): Speaking on the actors that them, Eden Shea Beck and Matt Callahan, whom performed a phenomenal job. We’ve spent months in pre-production fleshing out the characters and couldn’t be more proud of their development.

(UM): Could you explain what the meaning is behind the last scene of the film?

(JM): I wanted a peaceful resolution after Emilie and Theodore’s chaotic and melancholy journey. Also, I wanted to display a physical sense regarding love; if you really love someone, it’s best to let it go.

(UM): Was there anyone to blame between the relationship of Teddy and Emily?

(JM): Both of the characters are to blame but, it’s the innate human reception of other’s vulnerability and the desire to repair them that ultimately led to their demise.

(UM): If there was one thing you could have done differently to the short film, what would it be?

(JM): I’m proud of the accomplishments I’ve made making this project. Mirror being the first project, I’m excited about the future endeavors it will take to achieve more innovative and unique storytelling in writing and visually.

(UM): Where could someone watch this short film?

(JM): The project will be released through YouTube shortly. Also, working on my personal website to view the film and any future content. You can follow my social media for future updates: www.instagram.com/watermello93

(UM): Have you currently submitted this film to any film festivals?

(JM): Mirror is currently in the festival circuit. It will be soon be launched on my YouTube channel publicly.
