Collecting over 175 hours of footage for this documentary, They travelled to fifteen different US cities, not to mention France, China, and Mexico during the making of Behind the Strings. The documentary and its classical form fit the core Western repertoire of the chamber music group it follows. The Shanghai Quartet is the first string quartet to emerge on an international scale from China after the Cultural Revolution. With over 3000 concerts in 30 different countries, the Shanghai Quartet are known for their core Western Repertoire, and the inclusion of works inspired by Chinese folk music that include non-Western instruments.
