Red Sea Film Festival 2022 | The Heysel Tragedy

Film Festivals in recent years have begun to showcase TV. As someone who loves TV, I have enjoyed this shift as it gives festival goers the chance to ask questions from the creators of TV in the same way they have been able to do with film. TV has long been treated like the unrefined child of film, so it’s nice that it gets to step up to a bigger stage. It’s also a lovely opportunity to see a program on a big screen in a way you are unlikely to get a chance to do in regular circumstances. Though there is one major drawback. The shows tend to be serial, and I think the most I’ve gotten to see of a series in a festival was four episodes (2 is the standard), so it’s like getting a preview of a show, but then you might have to wait months to see the rest. And that’s assuming the show gets distributed in your market. So, you have to go into these events prepared to leave wanting more, but also know the wait could be long if it doesn’t already have a set premiere coming up. Taking part in this year’s Red Sea International Film Festival is a Belgian docu-series on The Heysel Tragedy. Based on the book ‘Heysel, a European tragedy’ by Jean-Philippe Leclaire, The Heysel Tragedy was directed by Jan Verheyen. This incident from the European Cup Final in the summer of 1985 is probably a familiar one to people that are big fans of football (soccer for people from Canada and the U.S.), but I had never heard about it before I sat down to watch the two episodes that screened at the festival. The two episodes did their job, they had me wanting to click next, even when I knew there was no next episode for me.

I was aware of hooliganism from films like Green Street and The Firm (and also weirdly in a piece on the history of Stella Artois), but it is different seeing it play out through archival footage vs. a narrative film, and also hearing people that were hooligans speaking back on an incident they were at/involved with that resulted in lost lives. I have travelled Europe during FIFA and have seen how intense the watch parties get, with entire cities congregating at the bars with outdoor screens to watch the games and everywhere else dead. The passion is electric. But what you see in the footage at Heysel, you see it go so wrong so quickly.

While the docu-series does give voice to people from both Liverpool and Juventus sides, it makes clear its stance that Liverpool was the aggressor (and I’m inclined to follow that belief based on the footage included). However, it doesn’t shy away from the fact that the tragedy could have been avoided with better infrastructure, both facility and management, of the event.

It’s not an easy docu-series to watch. You can see that all the people interviewed are still wrestling with tragedy all these years later. The players who played a game in the wake of the tragedy, not knowing the full scale of what happened until after. The families who lost people, and have to carry that forever. The people that made it out of section Z but moments when they thought they might not. Even the man that stormed section Z from the Liverpool side because he was young and the “hooliganism” was part of attending games now, like singing when he was a child, though he was also quick to try and shift blame onto the police.

The Heysel Tragedy episode 1 and 2 are screening together as part of the Red Sea International Film Festival.
