At the 2nd annual Red Sea International Film Festival (Red Sea IFF) they are honouring triple-threat, writer-director-actor Nadine Labaki and multi-award-winning actor Ranbir Kapoor with Variety International Vanguard Awards.
Lebanese writer-director-actor Nadine Labaki began her career as an actor, but it wasn’t until she came up with the idea for Caramel (which she also starred and directed) that her career flourished. Caramel premiered at Cannes as part of their Directors’ Fortnight and went on to become a commercial success. But it is 2018’s Capernaum that she is best known for being behind. Capernaum, which she directed and co-wrote, led to her being the first Female Arab director nominated for an Oscar. Capernaum was nominated for Best Foreign Language Film. In addition to receiving the Variety International Vanguard Award at the Red Sea IFF, she will be taking part in their “In Conversation” series, with her event set to take place on Saturday, 3rd December at Vox Cinemas, Red Sea Mall.
Indian actor Ranbir Kapoor is someone people might call a nepotism baby as he comes from a family with basically a dynastic hold on the Hindi film industry, spanning almost 100 years. However, while his name may have given him access it’s his talent that has kept him gainfully booked. So much so, that in addition to winning numerous awards for his acting, including 6 Filmfare Awards, he is also one of the highest-paid actors in Hindi cinema. He rose to acclaim with Saawariya for which he won his first Filmfare Award. This fall he starred and produced Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva, a film that also claims Disney as one of its producers under the Star Studios banner, in fact, the first film released under that new production banner. The film became the highest-grossing Hindi film of 2022 and the 5th highest-grossing Indian film so it’s no wonder that two sequels are being developed as well as a possible spinoff. To talk about his diverse career and possibly where he’s planning to take it next, the Red Sea IFF Variety International Vanguard Award recipient can also be found “In Conversation” on Wednesday, 7th December at Vox Cinemas, Red Sea Mall.
When announcing the pair as recipients of the Variety International Vanguard Awards Mohammed Al Turki; CEO of the RedSeaIFF said: “Nadine Labaki and Ranbir Kapoor are two remarkable talents in the film industry. We are honored to be partnering with Variety to recognize their huge talent and contribution to the industry, and to be hosting In Conversation events with each of them to hear about their past success and hopes for the future. Each a unique storyteller, we look forward to welcoming them to Jeddah.”
