The Red Sea International Film Festival commenced with a spectacular opening ceremony that set the tone for a vibrant celebration of cinema. Directed by the critically acclaimed Egyptian filmmaker Karim Shenawy, the evening featured the screening of a highly anticipated film. The event was graced by Shenawy himself along with the lead cast members Badr Mohamad, Haneen Mohamad, Islam Mubarak, and Aseel Omran, as well as the film’s producer and writer, Haitham Dabbour.
Highlighting the festival’s prestige, the Opening Night Ceremony saw the presence of Jury President Spike Lee, a cinematic legend whose distinctive voice and vision have shaped contemporary filmmaking. Joining him on the jury panel were renowned Egyptian filmmaker Abu Bakr Shawky (“Yomeddine”), celebrated Turkish actress Tûba Büyüküstün (“Black Money Love,” “Rosso Istanbul”), Academy Award®-nominated British actress Minnie Driver (“Good Will Hunting,” “The Serpent Queen”), and veteran actor and producer Daniel Dae Kim (“Lost,” “Hawaii 5-0,” “Avatar: The Last Airbender”). Their collective expertise promises to bring depth and dynamism to the festival’s judging process.
The ceremony was eloquently guided by MCs Danielle Rahme and Hakeem Jomah. Hosting duties were carried out by Jomana Al-Rashid, Chairwoman of the Red Sea Foundation, Mohammed Asseri, CEO of the Red Sea Film Foundation, and Shivani Pandya Malhotra, Managing Director of the RSIFF, who warmly welcomed attendees and celebrated the festival’s commitment to championing cinematic storytelling.
A highlight of the evening was the presentation of three honorary awards, which paid tribute to the remarkable contributions of luminaries in the world of cinema. The legendary Indian cinema icon Aamir Khan received his award from Eva Longoria, acknowledging his transformative impact on the global film industry. Academy Award nominee Emily Blunt was celebrated by the iconic Michelle Yeoh, recognizing her extraordinary range and contributions to film. The night also honored award-winning Egyptian actor Mona Zaki, with Minnie Driver presenting the accolade in recognition of her remarkable body of work and influence in Arab cinema. Additionally, a Special Recognition Award was presented to Vin Diesel for his outstanding contributions and beloved characters, with Michelle Rodriguez delivering the tribute.
The star-studded opening ceremony not only underscored the Red Sea Festival’s commitment to honoring cinematic excellence but also set the stage for an inspiring program of films, panels, and events.
