It comes as no shock to anyone who has been even paying passing attention to this year’s SXSW festival from the Headliner section Dev Patel’s Monkey Man took the Audience Award. It has to be one of the most buzzed-about films in recent years, and this a festival that only 2 years ago had Everything Everywhere All at Once, which left the festival only winning the Adobe editing award, but would go on to achieve major acclaim throughout its theatrical run. Dev Patel has put together a fine acting career with a diverse range of roles and it’s no wonder people are excited to see a film he put his heart into, not only as an actor, but also as one of the writers, the director, and producer.
Additionally, Bob Trevino Likes It won the Audience Award and the Jury Award for the Narrative Feature Competition. The film doesn’t currently have distribution in the US, but with both a jury and audience win in its profile it should look more promising to see in a theater near you this year. Which is exciting because Barbie Ferreira was one of the bright spots of the first season of Euphoria and a delight in in Unpregnant, so I’m glad to see her starring in another film that is being well-received. And opposite John Leguizamo? It’s clear why this film has charmed audiences, especially when considering that it is inspired by the experiences of writer-director Tracie Laymon.
From March 8-16th, the 31st SXSW Film & TV Festival presented 118 features, including 91 World Premieres, and 80 Short Films (including 19 Music Videos). The TV program included 7 TV Premieres, 5 TV Spotlight World Premieres, and 6 Independent TV Pilots. The XR Experience program included 36 projects. Speaking at the Award ceremony Claudette Godfrey, SXSW VP of Film & TV, said about the program, “We knew our audiences would flip for our program filled with explosive studio films, surprising indie dramas and comedies, riveting TV, powerful documentaries, gripping gems from around the world, and groundbreaking XR, and yet the reaction still exceeded our expectations. The sheer joy of the shared cinema experience was undeniable all week long, and we can’t wait for these films to find audiences after SXSW!”
