On making Krunk: An interview

The music video, Krunk, was directed and shot by Francesco Siro Brigiano. The track is drawn from Alessio Pianelli‘s latest album, A Sicilian Traveler. It is a wonderful film that has already won several awards from various film festivals. Thank you for speaking with us today.

Chris McClure, UniversalCinema Magazine (UM): First of all, the setting is beautiful. Where was this shot?

Francesco Siro Brigiano (FB): We shot in Sicily, on one of the most beautiful islands of the Egadi. The island of Marettimo. One part, the one built on the water, was shot near the Marsala coasts. The beach of San Teodoro is known for this beautiful mirror feature. When I saw these two magnificent places for the first time, I thought that sooner or later I wanted to shoot something. What we see is actually our Mediterranean Sea.

(UM): At first I thought I was looking at a computer generated visual effect, but it seems that you were playing in a shallow reef. Is that correct? Did you have to work around the tide?

(FB): Yes, as I said, the beach of San Teodoro has this incredible feature, we arrived at dawn so as to have more tranquility from the many tourists who flock to the place and to have more magical light.

(UM): What was the production like? Were there any unexpected surprises while shooting?

(FB): Well, the best surprise was to have visited all the wonderful sea caves of the island of Marettimo. It was an unforgettable day.

(UM): Why did you choose the track Krunk for the video?

(FB): Actually Alessio Pianelli proposed this track to me as the launch of his album. I found it inspiring and perfect to start her record release. It is a type of music that binds perfectly to the images, very cinematic. I would also find it very suitable for a possible film.

(UM): The video was really beautiful, with the amazing shots of the natural surroundings and underwater shots of the crystal clear water. What was the concept behind the video?

(FB): My approach to making video clips is the same as when I was a child. I listen to a song that makes me dream, many times. Little by little the emotion begins to look for a form to fully manifest itself. Thus the images begin, like a daydream…Then you can start with your head held high, having made your mind up about the project. Only in this way can I tackle ambitious projects, having clearly in mind what kind of emotional development to tell. At the beginning of the writing I imagined a beach fire at night, a man returning to his old island,  a symbolic object that sparkled in the flames.

But everything then becomes allegory, in reality the video was designed to tell about the meeting between the adult and the child. So the symbol of the warrior at the end wants to ask a question “What happened to our battles” … maybe our character is simply finding the strength to start an abandoned challenge in that inner cave.
