Red Sea Film Festival 2023 | Dispatch #1

On November 30, 2023, in Jeddah, the 3rd Edition of the Red Sea International Film Festival (Red Sea IFF) kicked off with its Opening Ceremony Gala. Red Sea IFF along with their festival partners VOX Cinemas, NEOM, and the MBC GROUP welcomed cinephiles, locals, and the global community to the festivities, which run through the 9th of December.

The event was hosted by Red Sea Foundation Chairwoman Jomana-Al Rashid and Red Sea International Film Festival CEO Mohammed Al Turki. While welcoming the crowd Jomana-Al Rashid said, “In the next 10 days festival-goers will experience a journey of global cinematic brilliance. We will screen 126 films from 77 countries in over 47 languages from talented directors, actors, producers, and filmmakers from every corner of the globe. At the Red Sea Film Foundation, we believe film is a transformative force and we’re committed to empowering filmmakers. Our Festival exists to provide a platform for stories that can change the world.”Mohammed Al Turki added, “The Red Sea IFF is entering its third edition with a film [that] demonstrates the progressive collaboration of creative voices shaping Saudi cinema and kicks off ten days of incredible work from every corner of the globe – as well as our thriving industry incubator Souk, and masterclasses from celebrated entertainment leaders through our In Conversations strand. We are excited to once again welcome the world of cinema to Jeddah – and see our theme of Your Story, Your Festival come to life.”

The Opening Ceremony Gala emcees for the evening were Raya Abi Rached, a Lebanese TV presenter best known for Arabs Got Talent, and Ibrahim Alhajaj, an actor and comedian best known for his film Sattar. The Gala began with a welcome address from festival leadership, and actor Sofia Vergara. At the Gala, there were also three honorary awards presented. Abdullah Al-Sadhan, known for work such as Tash ma Tash, was presented an award by Mohammed Al Turki. Diane Kruger, known for her work in things like Inglorious Basterds, was presented an award by juror Fatih Akin. And Ranveer Singh, who has been on Forbes India’s Celebrity 100 list since 2012, was presented an award by Sharon Stone, who called him an all-around creative genius.

In attendance at the Gala was Jury President Baz Lurhmann, along with his jury – Joel Kinnaman, Freida Pinto, Amina Khalil, Paz Vega, Hana Alomair, and Fatih Akin (who also presented one of the honorary awards). Also in attendance were, Yaacoub Alfarhan, Sara Taibah, Abdullah Alsadhan, Hira Mahmoud, Fatima Al-Banawi, Summer Shesha, Nayla Alkhaja, Hakeem Jomah, Hira Mahmood, Yasser Alsoghaf, Faysal Aldokhei, Ayman Khoja, Majed Z. Samman, Tawfik Alzaidi, Johnny Depp, Maiwenn, Zoe Saldana, Will Smith, Michelle Williams, Catherine Martin, Lucas Bravo, Alessandra Ambrosio, Ed Westwick, Amy Jackson, Rita Ora, and many more.

The night included a screening of the World Premiere of Yasir Al Yasiri’s HWJN, which follows the story of a kind-hearted jinn, HWJN (Baraa Alem), as he discovers the truth about his royal lineage and sets off on an epic journey to reclaim his birthright while battling ancient evils to maintain the harmonious balance between his world and ours. Along the way, he meets and develops an unexpected romantic connection with Sawsan (Nour Alkhadra), a young medical student. The screening was attended by the director and lead cast: Baraa Alem, Nour Alkhadra, Naif Aldaferi, Alanoud Saud, Mohsen Mansour, and Shaimaa Al Tayeb.
